To provide play activities which aim to increase levels of participation in moderate intensity physical activity amongst hard to reach children and young people in three priority neighbourhoods within the Tunbridge Wells Borough.
The people we helped are/were...
Children and young people between the ages of 5-16 who live in the three areas.
What they have said was...
'I don't usually have the confidence to do sport but this has been really good fun'
We set up the project because...
There is a recognised need to improve the health and well-being of children and young people in these areas, which have been idenitified as priority neighbourhoods.
The change we want/wanted to bring about is/was...
Increase levels of participation in moderate intensity physical activity and promote a healthier lifestyle encouraging healthy eating habits.
What we did or are doing
Providing accessible and fun play opportunities in the three areas including art workshops, multi-sport sessions, dance workshops, health walks and nutritional advice.
We chose this method because...
We consulted with local services and groups as well as with children, young people and their families about what activities they would like to particpate in.
What's happened is...
Since we began running the activities at the end of June 2008 we have provided 20 sessions on different activities with 200 attendances recorded. We have also successfully worked alongside partner organisations including local schools and community centres.
What we'd do differently...
Consult with other detached play schemes across the country to share ideas and ways of working.
Evaluation
An evaluation will be carried out in the first year - May 2009 and will be available to others upon request.
This project helped to deliver...
One of the priorities of the Tunbridge Wells Sustainable Community Plan which is to promote health and improve well-being. It also fits in with the Leisure Strategy, Play Strategy and the Youth Strategy as well as the corporate policy of developing safer and stronger communities.
The project is now...
Ongoing.
